Street Bully

As I crossed the street in my neighbourhood last winter, someone hollered out their car window, “Maybe if you weren’t so fat, it wouldn’t take you so long to get across the street.”

Ugh, how horrible. That was beyond unnecessary of him.

First of all, this person is behaving like a coward. You didn’t say whether it was a man or woman-whomever it was said it as they were driving by, so you didn’t really have the opportunity to respond and affirm your dignity. I’ll bet this person wouldn’t have the guts to say that to your face.

Second, it does not take much intelligence or maturity to hurl insults at a person regarding their weight. I’ve seen 5-year-olds do it all the time, calling each other fatso. Whenever a person/adult behaves this way, they are operating on the level of child and don’t deserve any respect. And whatever payoff this person got from making that comment will not last long because in the end you can never lift yourself up by putting someone else down. It won’t work and they are still going to have to face themselves eventually if they are to develop true positive self-esteem.
